Prossima Apertura™

A seven-phase method for building a business before you have to correct its mistakes

From testing the investment through to running the business: every phase is there to cut improvisation, avoidable cost and disconnected decisions.

Why it exists

Opening is not one decision. It is a sequence of decisions.

Market, investment, location, margins, space, permits, people, positioning and launch are interdependent choices. Handled one at a time and under the pressure of the urgent, the risk is building a business that is hard to put right afterwards.

Prossima Apertura™ exists to put a single hand on those decisions, in new openings just as much as in relaunches, expansions and reorganisations.

“Before you take someone’s advice, ask yourself whether that person has ever actually built something that works.”

The programme

The seven phases

Each phase lowers the risk and increases control. Open a phase to read it in full.

  1. 01 Validate Strategic analysis and feasibility

Market, competition, demand, investment and resources. Before going further, we check whether the project rests on solid enough foundations.

    Read the phase in full

No premises, no investment, no opening and no launch are allowed before the project has been properly diagnosed. Before you take on a site or invest in a new business, it is essential to test whether it stands up and to gain an objective view of it, through market and competitor analysis and a study of the territory, of real demand and of the target customer, of the capital available, of economic sustainability and of expectations. After four or five weeks the outcome is a strategic report with a concrete action plan, one that either says “yes” or says that something needs revisiting before you start.

  2. 02 Design Business model and numbers

Value proposition, margins, break-even, revenue structure and economic sustainability. A good idea has to become a model that holds up.

    Read the phase in full

A good idea is not yet a business. Value proposition, competitive positioning, margins, break-even, sales strategy, the business plan for opening: every choice is weighed against real profitability and against economic balance over time. The aim is to reach the opening, the relaunch or the expansion with real, concrete figures in hand, rather than with instinct and assumptions.

  3. 03 Choose Location and strategic space

We assess how well the location fits, along with footfall, layout and how the space works for the business model.

    Read the phase in full

The wrong location, or a fit-out that does not work, can undo even an excellent idea, and it is one of the most expensive mistakes an entrepreneur can have to correct. I analyse every property or space you have chosen beyond the question of how it looks, assessing how well it fits your business model. Where refurbishment is planned, I supervise the layout and the organisation of the space and take care of optimising the retail fit-out, so that every area supports day-to-day operations, the customer experience and the performance of the business. My aim is to make the property a strategic asset from day one, not simply a cost to carry.

  4. 04 Prepare Structure and coordination

Permits, technical professionals, timings and tasks all have to move in step. Directing the project avoids gaps, overlaps and delays.

    Read the phase in full

Council permits, health authority paperwork, workplace safety, technical documentation, licences: administrative compliance is a decisive part of opening a business without delays or complications. In this phase I supervise the work of surveyors, architects and the other technical professionals involved, checking that every requirement is met correctly and on time. I do not step into the technical work that is theirs to do, but I follow its progress so that nothing is overlooked in the run-up to opening.

  5. 05 Organise People, roles and procedures

Responsibilities, standards and processes need to be clear before day-to-day operations swallow all of the owner’s time.

    Read the phase in full

Many businesses revolve entirely around the owner because clear roles, shared procedures and service standards are missing. In this phase I take care of organising and training the team at the retail outlet: I set responsibilities, roles and processes, and I handle the operations manual, the team’s initial training and everything else needed to reach opening day on schedule. When every person knows what is expected of them, the work flows better, and the owner can turn to strategic decisions instead of managing one emergency after another. The result is a business that works even when the owner is not there.

  6. 06 Launch Positioning and opening

Brand, communications, launch strategy and customer experience are built in line with the market and the economic model.

    Read the phase in full

Opening a retail business is the first moment the market comes into contact with the brand. I define naming, visual identity, competitive positioning, local communications and the launch strategy, creating an image that is consistent with the business model and the audience. I plan every piece of communication ahead of opening, so that the launch becomes the first step of growth and a genuine strategic lever.

  7. 07 Govern Leadership and control

After the launch, numbers, team and priorities are monitored so the course can be corrected and the system consolidated.

    Read the phase in full

Support through the first months after opening, so that everything starts on the right foot, at the point where the initial excitement meets day-to-day management. In this phase, which can last up to six months, I work alongside the owner with regular leadership meetings, identifying together the strategic corrections that the work on the ground gradually makes necessary: growth is followed step by step and, where needed, the course is corrected in real time.
